Andy battles through to reach Quarters
Andy has defeated Russian Mikhail Youzhny to reach the quarter finals of Wimbledon.
The two players had only previously met on two occasions with Andy winning both and it was Andy who began brightly by securing an early break in the fourth game. Youzhny made several attempts to try and claw back the break of serve but Andy’s serving was too strong and comfortably served out the set.
The second set appeared as though it was going to follow a similar fashion to the first with Andy again securing the early break, however it was not as expected. Out of the blue Youzhny won 4 games on the bounce, leaving Andy finding himself 5-2 down and having to break his opponent to stay in the set. Andy found a second wind and then won 3 games on the bounce to recover and the set inevitably went to a tie break. A close affair much like the set, it was Andy who crucially secured the mini break and thumped a backhand to take the second set.
After a short medical timeout from his Russian opponent a ruthless Andy charged out into the third set. After a shaky first game in which Andy had to save a break point, he then set about meticulously pulling apart Youzhny’s game and in the end was much too strong for his opponent. Andy continued to serve and crucially break well to take the third set 6-1 and secure a place in the quarterfinals.
Speaking after the match Andy said “It was a tough match, the first couple of sets especially but once I got ahead in the third I concentrated hard on not letting him back in like I did in the second set. I don’t take anything for granted I know how hard these tournaments are to win. There are no guarantees here and I don’t come into them thinking I am going to win. I think a few rounds ago I was more nervous but today I felt calmer before the match, I just concentrate on each game”
Andy will now play Spaniard Fernando Verdasco in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
