Andy books place in US Open third round
Andy has defeated Leonardo Mayer in straight sets to reach the second round of the US Open.
Both players started the match brightly, and it became apparent the first set would quickly become a closely fought contest with each player trading respectively from the baseline, finding the key winning shot when it counted on serve. However after a frustrating first 10 games, Andy was finally able to find the break, crucially at 5-5. Andy now serving for the set, wasted little time holding his serve to secure the first set 7-5.
The second set was a substantially more one sided affair, and Andy charged out of the blocks racing to 3-0 lead. After a nervy hold from his Argentinian opponent, Andy wasted little time in securing the second set, pulling apart his opponent, and confidently closing the set out with another crucial break at 4-1, and then emphatically holding his serve to secure the second set 6-1.
After such a dominant second set, many expected Andy to finish off the Argentinian, but Mayer had other ideas. After a lapse of concentration on serve, Andy’s serve was broken for the first time in the match, and the lapse of concentration seemed to last as he quickly found himself 1-4, 0-40 down. However never one to roll over, Andy clawed back the gap, saving 4 break points to hold serve. At 3-5 down, Andy needed to break his opponent to save the set, however Mayer found three massive first serves to take a set off Andy, and drag the tie into a fourth set.
After a shaky third set, Andy came out fighting in the fourth, beginning the match with a solid hold of serve followed by a break, Andy got off to the perfect start. Andy was ruthless in his shot making and it was only a matter of time before he broke his opponent again, this time to love, leaving himself serving for the match. Now in the zone, Andy wasted little time serving out the match, at match point Andy placed a second serve delicately to Mayer’s backhand and watched his opponents back hand soar long of the baseline, to secure the set 6-1 and book himself a place in the third round.
Commenting on his third round opponent, Florian Mayer, Andy said “It’ll be a very tricky match, he is a very talented player, who comes to the net a lot, I’ll need to be ready for that and hopefully I can get through it”
