Andy marches on in New York
Andy has defeated the world number 47 Florian Mayer with a convincing display in the third round of the US Open, taking the match in straight sets 7-6 (2), 6-2, 6-2.
Andy’s opponent started the match brightly, and it was apparent that he wasn’t going to make Andy’s life easy. Andy struggled on serve in the early stages of the match, however he managed to cling on and he eventually found his groove and the set was forced into a tie break. Andy lifted his game for the tie break and was able to produce an ace to create a 2-0 advantage. The pressure began mounting and the German began to crumble. Despite earning himself his first point of the tie break, with Andy leading 5-1, Mayer was delaying the inevitable and Andy wasted no time finishing the tie break and closing it out 7-2.
Andy appeared to take motivation from his tie break performance and flew out of the blocks in the second set, storming to a 3-0 lead. From that moment on the German was just chasing and Andy began to really turn the screw and was returning Mayer’s serve emphatically. Mayer clawed back a game, however Andy held serve well throughout the second set to lead 5-2, and crucially broke his opponent to secure the second set.
Throughout the third set Andy seemed in cruise control, and any nerves that were evident in the first set, had clearly subsided. Andy played some spectacular tennis in the third, most notably a delicately placed cross court drop shot that had the entire Arthur Ashe Stadium on their feet. Andy really stretched his opponents game, forcing his opponent to engage in long tiring rallies, and at match point he had his opponent ball chasing until it became all too much and Mayer netted his forehand, to hand Andy a place in the fourth round.
Speaking after the match Andy said “It was very tough conditions today, he is a very tricky opponent, and it’s tough to get into a rhythm against him, so im really glad to get through in three sets today”
When asked if there were any areas Andy felt he could improve, Andy explained “I need to start the matches a little quicker, I was hitting the ball well in the end, but starting slightly quicker would help me.”
Andy now faces the winner of the Istomin and Seppi third round tie that is currently in progress.
