Andy storms into the Fourth Round of Wimbledon
Andy has reached the fourth round of Wimbledon with a comfortable straight sets victory over Tommy Robredo.
Andy produced a wonderful display of confident tennis, in front of a capacity Centre Court crowd. The roof was closed prior to the match, due to the rain that had hampered play on the outside courts for most of the day. Andy who is no stranger to playing beneath the roof, didn’t waste any time in testing his opponent, causing him many a problem from the baseline to quickly produce a double break and lead 4-1. Despite a small wobble immediately after the change over Andy comfortably calmed himself and served out the set emphatically.
It looked as though Andy’s opponent would be marching back to the changing rooms quicker than expected after Andy again leapt out of his chair and immediately went to work on every aspect of his Spanish opponents game, breaking him almost immediately, and then holding well to ensure the second set was secured.
After going a break up, Andy surrendered a rare break of serve to allow the world number 27 back into the set. The set continued gamely and Andy secured the break decisively at 5-5 to allow himself to serve for the match. Andy found his big serves when it mattered, thumping them across the net at his opponent, followed by equally powerful ground strokes. The final gamed was an example of how much of the match had been, and despite a thumping forehand pass from Robredo at the first match point, Andy confidently served out the set and took the final set 7-5.
Speaking after the match Andy said “I thought it was a high-level match, I struck the ball very well throughout. He served very well in the third set, I had very few chances but I got the break right at the end. I went for it. I hit a lot of winners and that was the most pleasing part. I hit the ball better from the back of the court which felt great. I hope I can keep playing better. I’ve been pushed in my matches, I’ve been tested and have come through it well.”
Andy will play in the fourth round on Monday.
