Andy beat Ivan Dodig of Croatia at the United States Open late Wednesday, the final score a lopsided 6-2, 6-1, 6-3. It took him roughly the same amount of time to conduct his regular postmatch interview with The New York Times, in which he talked about his passion for fantasy sports. And by fantasy football, he did not mean N.F.L.

Q.
We heard you’re into fantasy sports?

A.
I play fantasy basketball and fantasy football, soccer. Back home it’s really only the fantasy football, I mean, that all of my friends play. But it is pretty big. I know a lot of the tennis players. Someone like Daniel Nestor. He does hockey, basketball, football, and he has multiple teams in multiple leagues. A lot of the American guys I know are into the baseball as well.

For people that travel a lot, I think it’s good. It gives you something to sort of check up on every day and also sort of stay in touch with your friends as well.

How are your leagues set up?

A.
There’s two leagues of 10. There’s a premier league and a second league. So three people get relegated, three people get promoted each year.

Q.
What’s your team name?

A.
Back Where I Belong. That was my team name I went for last year. I haven’t changed it yet for this year’s one.

Q.
Where did that come from?

A.
Well, basically, the first year we all did it was like three years ago. And I won it the first year. And then the second year, I didn’t really, a lot of the guys were sort of losing interest, because we didn’t have a draft system, so if we were doing basketball, we could have exactly the same team. You have a certain amount of money to spend, and each player has a certain value, so me and you could both have LeBron James. We could both have Kobe Bryant. So we went to a different one, which was a draft system. So you could only have one Wayne Rooney and that was what we did last year, and I won last year.

I plan on winning again this year. I’ve won two out of three.

How do the guys take that?

A.
We have a trophy as well. Every year. It has the winner on it.

Q.
How big is it?

A.
About that big. (He holds his hands maybe six inches apart.) But it’s in front of all my tennis trophies. That’s for sure.

Q.
Even the gold medal?

A.
Yeah.

Q.
Never been relegated?

A.
Not yet, no. I don’t think it’s going to happen this year, either. I’ve got a good team.

Q.
Who plays in the league?

A.
It’s like friends, work colleagues, my brother is in it. In the first league, it got me, my brother, my uncle, and then Colin Fleming, who plays doubles, friends who used to play, people we know who have been around tennis in some way. Most everyone is involved in tennis.

Q.
Who talks the most trash?

A.
I’d say I’m probably up there with that. The thing is, you need to be so careful with it. Because you start doing it, the first week of the year, I was like laughing. I was telling everyone how good my team was. I don’t even need to make any trades. Or changes. And then the first game of the season, my best player gets carried off the pitch on a stretcher after eight minutes and is injured. So I’m trying to keep a lid on it for now.

Ever meet anyone you had on your team?

A.
Actually I did. I went to watch Tottenham against Arsenal. And a couple of the Tottenham players at the time, they were quite big tennis fans. One of them was Peter Crouch. And the other one was Michael Dawson. I had Michael Dawson on my fantasy team. And he was out with an injury, so I was just asking him how long he was going to be out for. He said I should drop him. He was going to be out for a while. Apart from that, no. I mean, I do ask around a couple of the footballers that I know. I do ask around for advice on transfers, who’s going where and stuff.

Could you see them doing fantasy tennis?

A.
They do have one. Some of my friends do it. But I’ve never really gotten into it to be honest. They have like, it’s sort of yearly, but there’s different tiers. There might be like 10 tiers. Guys that are ranked between 1 and 10. Guys that are ranked between 10 and 20. You basically pick a guy in each tier. I’ve never done it.

No one ever asked if they should drop you?

A.
Not yet.

Q.
And you do a basketball league?

A.
I started doing that a couple of years ago. That was just a league with all of the tennis players that Daniel Nestor does. I finished second the first year, and then last year I was garbage. I had Kevin Durant. And he was my best player that year.
