Andy’s through to the quarter-finals at the ATP 250 event in Los Angeles after a 6-1 4-6 6-2 win over qualifier Tim Smyczek.

Next up for Andy is Colombian world No. 65 Alejandro Falla, who beat Ernests Gulbis 4-6 6-3 7-6 earlier in the day.

Admitting to a bit of ring-rustiness after calling for the trainer in the latter stages of the match, Andy was quick to stress there would be no long standing issues ahead of the US Open.

“It won’t be a problem,” said Andy. “Normally you’re going to feel it. There’s a huge difference between the grass courts and the hard. I’ve been practicing for an hour or so every day and not really doing that much moving, then tonight I played a pretty long match and the conditions were cool.

“I managed to find a way to win,” he added. “it’s difficult when you don’t play for a long stretch and obviously I wasn’t planning to play here so I wasn’t necessarily as well prepared as I’d like.”
