Andy is through to the quarter-finals of the ATP 500 event in Valencia after a hard-fought 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over Leonardo Mayer that came in just over two and a quarter hours.

He’ll now face Albert Montanes, who advances courtesy of a walkover against the injured David Ferrer.

This was a good test for Andy on his comeback from injury, with the Argentine more than playing his part.

And what an uncharacteristic part it was too, full of very effective volleying on the back of solid groundstrokes.

He pushed Andy all the way, and at 5-0 to the good in the second set probably felt he was going to become the latest name in the chapter titled ‘upsets over players coming back from injury.’

But despite sending the match into a deciding set, it was Andy who typically came up with the decisive break for a 4-2 lead, and would hang on to seal the match with his eighth ace of the night.
