Andy will take on Leonardo Mayer for a place in the quarter-finals of the ATP 500 event in Valencia.

The match is scheduled for Thursday at 7pm, and Sky Sports will have live coverage.

Andy has never played the current World No. 64 at Tour level, despite the fact they are the same age, and even share the same birthday.

The Opponent

Unlike Gimeno-Traver before him, Mayer has been active on hardcourts since the US Open, where he made the second round after good runs in LA (l. SF’s, Carston Ball) and New Haven (l. QF’s, Andreev).

He’s made a less auspicious start to the indoor swing with a second round defeat in Stockholm, and a first round exit in Lyon.

Still, having avoided the rather more ‘Argentine’ clay court tournaments in favour of hardcourt, and with a touch of revenge over Andreev in the last round, he’ll pose a test.

For his part, Andy will no doubt be taking things one match at a time. He said as much after beating Gimeno-Traver:

“At first I struggled a bit to get into the match because I had been so long without playing, but gradually I felt more comfortable,” he said.

My goal is to get more rhythm and confidence back in my game.”
