Andy is through to the quarter-finals of the Masters 1000 in Toronto after a 6-2 0-6 6-3 win over Gael Monfils which sets up a match with David Nalbandian on Friday.
Andy’s winning record against Monfils extends to 3-1, but their latest encounter was a seesaw affair most notable for the Frenchman’s outrageous take-offs and equally painful landings.
After cruising through the first set, Andy found himself on the end of an even more deflating scoreline in the second as the flashy Frenchman hit something like his stride.
But Andy gathered himself promptly at the start of the third, breaking straight away despite a desperate airborne interception from Monfils that ended in vain as he crashed to the deck.
The Frenchman took a three minute medical time afterward, and would soon find himself down another break.
True to the spirit of the match he clawed one break back, and crashed to the ground several more times along the way.
But just as he looked like making it an honest finish he double faulted on match point, leaving Andy to look ahead to Nalbandian, and a possible place in the semi-finals.
