Andy is through to the quarter-finals at the Cincinnati Masters 1000 after a 4-6 6-3 7-6 (4) win over Ernests Gulbis that turned into a dogfight in the midday sun.

Looking to arrest a 4-nothing career losing streak against Andy, the Latvian came out hitting big, deservedly won the opening set, but ultimately came up short in the decisive third set tie-break.

“I just tried to play tough points and make him have to play great tennis to win the tie-break,” said Andy afterward.

As a result he now gets a chance to overturn a two game losing streak of his own against Mardy Fish, the American having beaten him in Miami and Queen’s earlier this year.

“I think when I played against him both times this year I was really struggling confidence-wise and wasn’t playing particularly well. Previously I had good results against him and I quite enjoyed his game style.

“I feel like I’m playing way, way better than I was a few months ago.”

And after another energy sapping match in the heat of the Ohio sun, Andy’s hoping that playing an American might see him pop up later in the order of play.

“Hopefully I can get given an evening match because it’s been seven days in a row where I’ve played between twelve and three o’clock and it’s been tough.”
