Andy is safely through to the third round of the US Open after a 7-5 6-3 6-0 win over the hugely unorthodox but highly entertaining Dustin Brown.
The win sets up a match against World No. 27 Stan Wawrinka.
The Jamaican will pick up plenty of new fans thanks to his explosive contribution to the first set but after the first ten games of the match there was only going to be one winner, and Andy rode it out with the minimum of fuss.
Brown’s cannon serve and free-swinging forehand had made for a captivating, toe-to-toe encounter in the early stages.
But Andy switched gears as Brown served to stay in the first set at 5-6, threading a couple of brilliant passes and scoring a match-changing break.
The Jamaican temporarily interrupted the momentum of a seven game roll with a break of his own in the second set, but found himself on the wrong end of another seven game streak as Andy sprinted across the finish line.
“I knew what to expect,” said Andy of the Jamaican’s serve: “I started to read it a little bit better towards the end of the first set because It’s a very quick action – It just took a little bit of time to work out.”
Declaring himself happy with two ‘very good’ sets, he stressed the importance of another solid service display.
“I’m going for it,” said Andy. “I think if I worry too much about just getting the serve in I don’t get many free points, and then I don’t feel comfortable on the court. When I’m going for my serves and I’m hitting a lot of aces and getting a lot of free points I feel I can go for my second serve a bit more.”
